Screen Life è un libro di immagini che documenta vent’anni di ricerca pittorica dell’artista Flavio de Marco sullo schermo del computer come nuova finestra sul mondo.

Nel 1999 l’artista inizia a dipingere le schermate del sistema operativo dei software informatici, ma prive dell’apparato testuale e iconico con cui appaiono per essere utilizzate. Rimosso l’aspetto funzionale e trasportate dallo spazio immateriale dello schermo a quello fisico della tela, queste schermate diventano uno spazio fisico a tutti gli effetti: il paesaggio della nuova vita digitale. I vent’anni successivi rappresentano la volontà di descrivere l’esperienza quotidiana di fronte allo schermo come una nuova vita di tipo proiettivo, non meno reale di una passeggiata all’aria aperta, che fa dell’immagine del mondo il principio della sua realtà. 

1999-2019

La ricerca dell’artista si snoda in diverse tappe che possono essere riassunte attraverso alcune sue mostre più importanti. Tra il 2003 e il 2006 l’artista realizza alcuni ambienti dipinti, Mimesi, che indagano il rapporto tra il modello e la copia. Nel 2007, con Souvenir Schifanoia, ispirato dagli affreschi di Palazzo Schifanoia a Ferrara, l’artista inserisce per la prima volta delle figure, provenienti dal ciclo dei mesi della Scuola Ferrarese. In Portrait of a Collection (2009) guarda alla pittura italiana del primo ‘900, presente nella collezione Estorick di Londra, per un confronto ravvicinato con la tradizione pittorica. Nel 2010, presso la Collezione Maramotti di Reggio Emilia, indaga il concetto di veduta urbana attraverso manifesti pubblicitari, mappe, navigatori satellitari, guide turistiche, stampe antiche, depliant, eccetera, come dispositivi della visione nell’era del turismo globale.

Dal 2011 al 2013 l’artista lavora al progetto Stella, che dopo le tappe di Berlino e Amsterdam approda alla Galleria nazionale d’arte moderna di Roma. In questa occasione rappresenta i paesaggi di un’isola immaginaria concepita come un collage di differenti scenari naturali. Stella diventa anche un libro, una guida turistica dell’isola e, allo stesso tempo, un viaggio nella pittura occidentale. In Planetarium (2017) appaiono oltre ai paesaggi extraterrestri anche i primi tentativi di allargare l’indagine sulla pittura di genere.  Nel progetto successivo difatti, Sui Generi (presso la Galleria Sabauda di Torino, la Galleria Estense di Modena e il Palazzo Corsini a Roma), segnerà un confronto più ravvicinato con i maestri del passato, a cui seguirà nel 2018 la mostra Figure, presso il Palazzo dei Diamanti di Ferrara. Questa esposizione, in contemporanea con la retrospettiva dedicata a Gustave Courbet, è l’occasione per focalizzare ulteriormente la ricerca sui generi della pittura: nudo, autoritratto, ritratto, paesaggio e astrazione. 

Il LIBRO

Screen Life raccoglierà per la prima volta tutte le opere su tela e alcune installazioni di Flavio de Marco realizzate dal 1999 al 2019 in un volume costituito da più di 400 immagini con una breve introduzione in inglese.  Il volume sarà realizzato in brossura cucita a filo refe, in formato 15 x 21, cm, per un totale di circa 450 pagine. Le immagini saranno tutte in quadricromia stampate su carta uso mano Pergraphica 90 gr.  La messa in stampa è prevista per novembre 2020 e la spedizione del volume entro il 31 dicembre 2020. 

L'ARTISTA

Flavio de Marco è nato a Lecce nel 1975. Ha studiato al Liceo classico e all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna. La sua ricerca pittorica è stata esposta dalla fine degli anni '90 in diverse gallerie e musei in Italia e all'estero. Ha spesso collaborato con il teatro e la musica, dove si ricorda la collaborazione con la Georgian Sinfonietta Orchestra a Tbilisi nel 2017 e quella con la Silk Road Simphony Orchestra a Berlino. Nel 2020 gli viene affidata la realizzazione della scenografia per l’opera “Brundibar” all’interno dell’Altmark Festspiele. Ha tenuto diverse conferenze in musei e istituzioni in Europa e per Radio Rai 3 è stato ospite nei programmi Il terzo anello-Damasco e Le meraviglie. Nel 2010 ha fondato la rivista di arte e pensiero Rivista e nel 2013 ha pubblicato il suo primo libro Stella (Danilo Montanari Editore). Dal 2020 è nuovamente docente presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera dove insegna “Metodologie e tecniche del contemporaneo”. Vive e lavora a Berlino.

I fondi raccolti serviranno esclusivamente a coprire i costi di produzione del libro.

SCREEN LIFE

Screen Life is a book that collects twenty years of the artist Flavio de Marco's pictorial research on the computer screen as a new window on the world.

In 1999 the artist began to paint the screens of the computer’s software, but without the texts and iconic apparatus with which they appear to be used. These empty screens have been transported from the immaterial space of the screen to the physical space of the canvas: the landscape of the new digital life. The following twenty years represent the artist’s intention to describe the daily experience in front of the screen as a new projective life as real as a walk in the open air. This life makes the image of the world the source of its reality.

1999-2019

The artist's research has unfolded in various stages that can be summarized through some of his most important exhibitions. Between 2003 and 2006 the artist creates some painted environments, Mimesi, which investigate the relationship between the model and the copy. In 2007, with Souvenir Schifanoia, inspired by the frescoes of Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara, the artist inserts figurative elements in his work for the first time. In Portrait of a Collection (2009) he looks at early 20th century Italian painting, present in the Estorick collection in London, for a comparison with the tradition of painting. In 2010, at the Maramotti Collection in Reggio Emilia, he investigates the concept of urban view through advertising posters, maps, satellite navigators, tourist guides, antique prints, brochures, etc., as devices of vision in the era of global tourism.

From 2011 to 2013 the artist works on the Stella project, which after the shows in Berlin and Amsterdam arrives at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. On this occasion the artist represents the landscapes of an imaginary island conceived as a collage of various natural scenarios. Stella also becomes a book, a tourist guide of the island and, at the same time, a journey into Western painting. In Planetarium (2017) the artist aims at  broadening his investigation into the different genres of painting. His following project, Sui Generi (at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin, the Galleria Estense in Modena and the Palazzo Corsini in Rome), is indeed focused on a closer comparison with the Old Masters, and will be followed in 2018 by the exhibition Figure at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. This exhibition, in conjunction with the retrospective dedicated to Gustave Courbet, is an opportunity to further refine his research on the genres of painting: nude, self-portrait, portrait, landscape and abstraction. 

THE BOOK

Screen Life will collect - for the first time - all of Flavio de Marco’s works on canvas, together with some of his installations, (dating from 1999 until 2019) in a single volume that will include more than 400 images with a short introduction in English. The book will be in paperback stitched with thread (15 x 21 cm), and will consist of approx. 450 pages. The images will all be in full color printed on Pergraphica hand-made paper 90 gr. The publication is scheduled for November 2020 and the volume will be shipped by 31 December 2020.

THE ARTIST

Flavio de Marco was born in Lecce in 1975. He studied classical humanities in high school and then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. Since the late 90s, his work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums in Italy and abroad. He has often made artistic incursions into the fields of theater and music, collaborating, for example, with the Georgian Sinfonietta Orchestra in Tbilisi in 2017 and with the Silk Road Simphony Orchestra in Berlin. In 2020 he was entrusted with the creation of the scenography for the opera "Brundibar" within the Altmark Festspiele. He has given several talks in museums and art institutions in Europe. He has been invited by the Italian national Radio Rai 3 to be a guest in the programs Il terzo anello - Damasco and Le meraviglie. In 2010 he founded the magazine Rivista and in 2013 he published his first book Stella (Danilo Montanari Editore). Since 2020 he has been teaching again "Methods and techniques of the contemporary" at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan. He lives and works in Berlin.
