Ogni anno organizziamo un evento di quattro giorni, DIG Festival, con l’obiettivo di portare in Italia il meglio del giornalismo investigativo a livello internazionale.

Cos’è DIG?

DIG è un’associazione culturale senza fini di lucro che dal 2015 sostiene il giornalismo, e in particolare il giornalismo investigativo, in tutte le sue forme, in Italia e nel mondo. Il nostro motto è “I wanna be your watchdog”.

DIG sta per Documentari, Inchieste, Giornalismi e richiama l’azione dello “scavare”, to dig in inglese. Dal 2015 organizziamo e promuoviamo un Festival che è diventato un punto di riferimento per i giornalisti e le giornaliste che si dedicano a inchieste e reportage: a loro DIG offre contatti con i maggiori broadcaster europei e un pitch dedicato per raccogliere parte del budget utile a produrre storie importanti. Dal 2020 il Festival si tiene a Modena, ogni inizio d’autunno.

Alla presidenza della nostra giuria internazionale, composta da personalità rilevanti del giornalismo mondiale, si sono alternati negli anni figure di assoluto prestigio come Naomi Klein, Gavin MacFadyen, Jeremy Scahill, Günter Wallraff e Alexander Nanau, il regista rumeno del film Colectiv (due nomination agli ultimi Oscar) che nel 2020 a Modena ha diretto i lavori della giuria.

Con il nostro impegno cerchiamo di dare risalto a voci e storie sottorappresentate o invisibili nei media mainstream, invitando sul palco giornalisti, documentaristi, whistleblower, attivisti, scrittori, artisti. La nostra vocazione è internazionale: dal 2015 a oggi abbiamo accolto 300 ospiti provenienti da oltre 40 paesi diversi. 

Dal 2020 assegniamo un premio speciale, il Watchdog Award, conferito l'anno scorso a Isaia Invernizzi dell’Eco di Bergamo (per il modo esemplare in cui ha raccontato la pandemia di Covid nella città lombarda) e a Veronika Munk di Telex.hu (per avere difeso la libertà di stampa in Ungheria sotto il regime di Viktor Orban).

Mentre l’avanzata dei populismi e delle dittature silenzia e incarcera le voci indipendenti, dalla Russia alle Filippine a Hong Kong, e l'Italia continua ad arrancare nelle classifiche mondiali della libertà di stampa, crediamo di essere riusciti a costruire un piccolo esempio virtuoso di resistenza e di celebrazione dell’importanza del giornalismo nelle vite di tutti noi. 

Lo abbiamo fatto nel nostro stile, con rigore, dando vita a uno spazio sicuro e vibrante in grado di catalizzare le energie di tutti, nel nome dell’inclusività e della diversità. I nostri valori fondanti sono tre: indipendenza, impegno e trasparenza.

Chi c’è dietro?

Dietro all’Associazione DIG c’è un piccolo ma combattivo gruppo di amanti del giornalismo investigativo, impegnati da sempre in prima linea nella sfida di valorizzare una categoria professionale troppo spesso sotto attacco. 

Il presidente dell’associazione è Matteo Scanni (autore e documentarista), il vicepresidente è Alberto Nerazzini (giornalista investigativo, documentarista e podcaster). Il direttivo è composto anche da Davide Fonda (giornalista e filmmaker), Philip di Salvo (ricercatore e giornalista esperto di hacking e sorveglianza) e Valerio Bassan (esperto di comunicazione e nuovi modelli del digitale). Il team di DIG è affiancato da un gruppo di professionisti che lavorano alla produzione del festival: Francesca Modena, Andrea Zini, Giulia Bononi, Francesca Minozzi, Gabriel Maccieri, Giulia Penta. L’associazione si compone inoltre da 33 soci.

Come ci sosteniamo?

DIG Festival è una manifestazione indipendente. I nostri finanziamenti arrivano da soggetti pubblici: nel 2021, dalla Regione Emilia-Romagna, dal Comune di Modena e dalla Fondazione di Modena.

A fronte di un piccolo budget, cerchiamo di garantire un evento aperto (e quasi interamente gratuito) della durata di quattro giorni che accoglie idee e costruisce relazioni, anche con le realtà del territorio modenese che ci supportano, come Fondazione Collegio San Carlo, AGO, FEM, Laboratorio Aperto, Unimore, festivalfilosofia, a cui si aggiungono la Fondazione Ordine Giornalisti Emilia-Romagna, la Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna e alcune aziende della regione.

Perché il tema del festival 2021 è Unmute?

La pandemia ha ristretto la nostra visione sul mondo, ha esasperato le distanze, ha occupato tutti gli spazi cognitivi e giornalistici, silenziando e cancellando storie e temi fondamentali.

Ovunque i broadcaster sono stati costretti a ridurre le produzioni, i freelancer e i reporter indipendenti hanno dovuto ripensare il senso stesso del proprio lavoro, incontrando nuove barriere e inesorabili pressioni.

Nella penombra generata dall’emergenza continua, il racconto dei fronti caldi arriva da remoto, debole e disturbato, proprio mentre le disuguaglianze e gli assalti alla democrazia, ai diritti, alle libertà e all'ambiente si intensificano.

È tornato il momento di mettere l'informazione e il punto di vista al centro, amplificando le tante voci che per troppo tempo sono state messe in muto.

Abbiamo così deciso di intitolare UNMUTE la settima edizione di DIG Festival. «Togliere il muto», «smutare», quel gesto entrato in modo prorompente nelle nostre quotidianità per noi significa dare e alzare la voce, ascoltare, dialogare.

Dal 30 settembre al 3 ottobre 2021 portiamo a Modena freelancer coraggiosi, attivisti e reporter sotto attacco, registi, studiosi e artisti che lottano per dare voce alle loro indagini, interpretazioni e narrazioni della realtà.

Daremo spazio a decine di storie, testimonianze, documentari e protagonisti del nostro tempo, in nome di una missione – quella del giornalismo di qualità – oggi più che mai necessaria e vitale per riprenderci gli strumenti con cui comprendere il mondo.

The funds raised will also be used to finance an investigative documentary through the DIG Pitch: our funding prize dedicated to freelance journalists and conferred by an international jury.

What is DIG?

DIG is a non-profit cultural association which since 2015 has supported journalism, in particular investigative journalism in all its forms, both in Italy and around the world. Our motto is “I wanna be your watchdog”.

DIG stands for “Documentari, Inchieste, Giornalismi” (“Documentaries, Investigations, Journalisms”), and also reflects the act of “digging” deeper. Since 2015, we have organised and promoted a Festival which has become a point of reference for those journalists who focus on investigation and reportage: DIG provides contacts with the main European broadcasters as well as a special pitch section to help fund part of the budget to be used to produce major stories. Since 2020, the Festival has been held in Modena, at the start of autumn.

Over the years, the chairmanship of our international jury, made up of leading figures from the world of journalism, has alternated between such prestigious figures as Naomi Klein, Gavin MacFadyen, Jeremy Scahill, Günter Wallraff and Alexander Nanau, as well as the Romanian director of the film Colectiv (nominated twice at the last Oscars), who headed the 2020 jury.

With our commitment, we try to highlight voices and stories underrepresented or invisible in the mainstream media, inviting journalists, documentary filmmakers, whistleblowers, activists, writers and artists to take to the stage. Our vocation is international: since 2015, we have welcomed 300 guests from over 40 different countries.

Since 2020, we have awarded a special prize, the Watchdog Award, to Isaia Invernizzi of the Eco di Bergamo (for the exemplary way in which he reported on the Covid pandemic in the Lombard city) and Veronika Munk of Telex.hu (for defending press freedom in Hungary under the Viktor Orban regime).

While the advance of populism and dictatorships silencing and imprisoning independent voices, from Russia to the Philippines to Hong Kong, and while Italy itself continues to lag behind in world press freedom rankings, we believe we have managed to build a small yet virtuous example of resistance and celebration of the importance of journalism in the lives of us all. 

We have done so in our own style and with rigour, creating a safe and vibrant space that can catalyse everyone’s energies, in the name of inclusivity and diversity. We have three core values: independence, commitment and transparency.

Why is the theme of the 2021 festival “UNMUTE”?

The pandemic has narrowed our view of the world, exacerbated distances, occupied all cognitive and journalistic spaces, silencing and erasing stories and key issues.

Wherever broadcasters have been forced to cut back on productions, freelancers and independent reporters have had to rethink the very meaning of their work, encountering new barriers and inevitable pressures.

In the dim light cast by the ongoing emergency, the narrative of international hotspots comes from afar, reaching us weak and disturbed, just as inequalities and assaults on democracy, rights, freedoms and the environment are intensifying.

The time has come again to place information and points of view at the centre, amplifying the many voices that have been muted for too long.

We therefore decided to name the seventh edition of the DIG Festival UNMUTE: that gesture which has become a key part of our daily lives, and which for us here means raising our own voices, listening and opening up dialogue.

From 30 September to 3 October 2021 we will bring to Modena courageous freelancers, activists and reporters under attack, filmmakers, scholars and artists who struggle to make their voices heard, along with their investigations, interpretations and narrations of reality.

We will give space to dozens of stories, testimonies, documentaries and protagonists of our time, in the name of a mission – that of quality journalism – today more than ever necessary and vital in order to regain the tools with which to interpret the world. 

Who is behind DIG?

Behind the DIG Association, there is a small but feisty group of lovers of investigative journalism, who have long been at the forefront of the challenge to enhance a professional category that is all too often under attack. 

The president of the association is Matteo Scanni (author and documentary filmmaker), while the vice-president is Alberto Nerazzini (investigative journalist, documentary filmmaker and podcaster). The board is also made up of Davide Fonda (journalist and filmmaker), Philip di Salvo (researcher and journalist, expert in hacking and surveillance) and Valerio Bassan (expert in communication and new digital models). The DIG team is supported by a group of professionals working on the production of the festival: Francesca Modena, Andrea Zini, Giulia Bononi, Francesca Minozzi, Gabriel Maccieri and Giulia Penta. The association also consists of 33 members.

How are we funded?

DIG Festival is an independent event. Our funding comes from public bodies: in 2021, it comes from the Emilia-Romagna Regional Council and the municipality hosting the Festival, Modena.

Despite our small budget, we try to guarantee an open (and almost entirely free) four-day event that welcomes ideas and builds relationships with other public bodies across the Modenese territory, such as the Fondazione Collegio San Carlo, AGO, FEM, Laboratorio Aperto, Unimore, festivalfilosofia, with the support of Fondazione Ordine Giornalisti Emilia-Romagna, Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna e some active companies in the region.
