SUMUD

LA PALESTINA NELLE FOTO DI JAAFAR ASHTIYEH

La Rete Romana di Solidarietà con il Popolo Palestinese insieme a uno dei suoi membri, gli Amici della Mezzaluna Rossa Palestinese, sono stati invitati a intraprendere questa notevole  impresa poco prima dell’inizio della pandemia di COVID-19. Ci era stato chiesto di collaborare a questo progetto da due giovani italiani – Marco Cattaneo e Andrea Paone – che avevano viaggiato in Palestina, incontrato il fotografo Jaafar Ashtiyeh e avevano fatto della realizzazione di questa mostra, con la partecipazione di Astiyeh, il loro obiettivo. Sfortunatamente, il progetto ha dovuto essere sospeso per circa due anni. Ma finalmente ora  lo abbiamo ripreso, unendo  le forze con due associazioni – Assopace Palestina e Fotografi Senza Frontiere – e con alcuni singoli attivisti per realizzare la mostra delle straordinarie fotografie di Jaafar Ashtiyeh, un pluripremiato fotoreporter palestinese. Abbiamo in programma di realizzare una mostra con eventi correlati che viaggerà anche a Milano e Napoli. La mostra principale e gli eventi si terranno presso la Città dell'Altra Economia a Roma dal 27 maggio al 3 giugno 2022 con la partecipazione attiva del fotografo stesso. A seguito, la mostra viaggerà a Milano, insieme al fotografo, dove sarà esposta presso la Cascina Casallotto dal 5 al 10 giougno 2022.

Oltre alla mostra, ci sarà un “dibattito World Café” incentrato sugli aspetti riguardanti la libertà di espressione, con i media come focus principale. Ci saranno anche altre occasioni durante il suo soggiorno in Italia in cui Ashtiyeh condividerà le sue numerose esperienze di lavoro come fotografo impegnato nella documentazione della vita quotidiana dei palestinesi e delle loro difficoltà, sofferenze e profonde aspirazioni sotto l'occupazione militare israeliana.

Cosa vogliamo realizzare?

Aiutaci a creare una mostra ed eventi correlati per raggiungere un pubblico più ampio e meno informato, combinando un forte impatto estetico con un messaggio molto importante – dona ciò che puoi.

Il progetto intende ampliare la conoscenza delle persone, attraverso le vivide immagini delle fotografie di Jaafar Ashtiyeh che fissa nella memoria i vari aspetti della vita quotidiana dei palestinesi sotto occupazione, nonché le sofferenze e i drammi che colpiscono donne, uomini e bambini che da oltre 70 anni non hanno conosciuto libertà e pace nella propria terra. Crediamo fermamente nell'efficacia della cultura in tutte le sue espressioni nel trasmettere la vera natura delle condizioni che i palestinesi devono affrontare oggi, specialmente quelli che vivono sotto le pressioni dell'occupazione in corso. L'elevata espressione estetica delle fotografie di Ashtiyeh si combina bene con le immagini potenti che sceglie e cattura per raccontare questa storia complessa, producendo un impatto che va ben oltre ciò che le solite fonti di notizie possono raccontarci.

•  rendere possibile una serie di eventi che contribuiranno a sensibilizzare i partecipanti sulla reale situazione nella Palestina occupata e sui temi riguardanti la libertà di espressione più in generale.

Donando al nostro progetto permetterai attivamente a questo fotoreporter professionista di grande talento e maturità artistica di raggiungere un più ampio pubblico italiano attraverso le sue fotografie documentari della vita dei palestinesi. Queste fotografie catturano una realtà commovente e innegabile. Rappresentano, in quanto tali, un atto di resistenza nonviolenta contro l'occupazione, una forma di resistenza alla quale anche voi potete contribuire. E tutto questo in quella che sarà la sua prima mostra non solo in Italia, ma al di fuori del Medio Oriente.

Il gruppo di associazioni e individui che si sono uniti per lavorare a questo progetto coordinerà tutti gli aspetti necessari, comprese le varie attività di raccolta fondi indispensabili al pieno successo dell’iniziativa.

Serve però un aiuto concreto per raggiungerequesti obiettivi: chiediamo quindi il sostegno della nostra comunità, e di chiunque voglia difendere il lavoro di fotografi palestinesi come Jaafar Ashtiyeh, di coloro che lavorano per documentare e far conoscere le lotte del popolo palestinese e per affermare il diritto umano universale alla libertà di espressione.

IL FOTOREPORTER

Jaafar Ashtiyeh nasce a Nablus, in Cisgiordania nel 1968.
In 40 anni di lavoro sul campo ha documentato con la sua macchina fotografica scene di conflitto e vita quotidiana; sempre nella sua amata terra, la Palestina, sperando che un giorno possa vivere in pace e priva di ogni conflitto. 

La sua carriera a livello internazionale inizia nel 1996 quando comincia a lavorare come fotoreporter per l’Agence France-Presse (AFP), tra leagenzie di stampa più importanti e autorevoli al mondo. Numerose sono leesibizioni che ha svolto a livello internazionale e i premi conferitogli nel corso della sua carriera. Nel 2017 ha conseguito a Dubai L’Arab Journalism Award (foto sotto) e, negli Stati Uniti, la Menzione d’Onore, nell’ambito della International News Single Category al Photo Contest della National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), che gli ha riconosciuto una forte influenza sull’opinione pubblica attraverso il suo lavoro. Nello stesso anno L’Arabian Business l’ha inserito tra le 100 persone più influenti degli Emirati Arabi.

QUALI SONO I SOGGETTI FOTOGRAFICI E I PROPOSITI DI QUESTA MOSTRA?

In 21 anni di attività, come fotografo, spesso mi sono trovato in situazioni di pericolo e sono stato ferito più di 20 volte. Uno dei miei intenti è portare all’attenzione del mondo la sofferenza costante dei palestinesi; ma il mio principale obiettivo è contribuire nel porre fine ad un lungo conflitto e pregare affinché un giorno la mia terra possa raggiungere un clima di pace. Egli aspira alla libertà, come diritto inviolabile, per i Palestinesi e per tutti gli esseri umani. I soggetti fotografici, immortalano scene di vita quotidiana, che raccontano la tensione e l’oppressione continua con cui tutti i Palestinesi sono costretti ogni giorno a confrontarsi: bambini che per non essere colpiti dai coloni non possono andare a scuola, uomini –giovani ed anziani – umiliati e maltrattati, case distrutte e devastate dalla guerra e dalle incursioni notturne dell’esercito con bambini che vengono strappati alle madri, violazioni incessanti dei diritti fondamentali. Ed in mezzo a tutto ciò la vita quotidiana che continua, il coraggio delle donne, l’amore grande per la propria terra, la speranza che non demorde. Tutto questo incontra oggi il visitatore che riesce a raggiungere la Palestina, e che si trova egli stesso immerso in una occupazione che dura da oltre settant’anni, perché la comunità internazionale continua a volgere lo sguardo da un’altra parte, mentre rivendica “il secolo dei diritti umani”. Questo paradosso è rappresentato con sapienza ed ingegno tecnico da un uomo che rappresenta una delle categorie più duramente attaccate e represse dalla situazione di occupazione perpetua: un giornalista.

CHI SIAMO

LA RETE ROMANA DI SOLIDARIETA’ CON IL POPOLO PALESTINESE

La Rete Romana di Solidarietà con il Popolo Palestinese è sorta nel clima formatosi a Roma in reazione all’attacco delle forze armate israeliane contro Gaza, protrattosi dal 27 gennaio 2008 al 18 gennaio 2009 e denominato dagli stessi assalitori: Operazione Piombo Fuso. L’emozione fu enorme e nelle reazioni di risposta si trovarono oltre trenta tra associazioni, comitati e gruppi che, pur nella diversità delle posizioni politiche e culturali, solidarizzavano con il Popolo Palestinese.

Sperimentata nell’emergenza l’importanza di unire gli sforzi per la causa comune, si pensò che la collaborazione potesse proseguire: fu così che si costituì la “Rete” come tenue collegamento meramente organizzativo, senza organi e formalità, allo  scopo di suscitare sinergie e  coordinare ove possibile le iniziative delle varie associazioni.

Conservando ciascun aderente la propria identità e le proprie posizioni, la Rete è accumunata dai valori dell’antifascismo, sostiene la parità di diritti per tutte e tutti e si oppone ad ogni forma di razzismo, sessismo, antisemitismo, islamofobia, discriminazione etnica e religiosa.

Suo unico obiettivo e senza prendere parte nelle questioni politiche interne, è il sostegno alla lotta del Popolo Palestinese per la fine dell’occupazione, il diritto al ritorno e il raggiungimento della libertà e di uguali diritti tra tutte le popolazioni della Palestina storica.

AMICI DELLA MEZZALUNA ROSSA PALESTINESE

Gli Amici della Mezza Luna Rossa Palestinese (AMLRP) sono un’associazione italiana no–profit fondata, nel 2003, dallo scrittore e politico italiano Raniero La Valle e dal pediatra palestinese Dott. Yousef Salman, rappresentante per l’Italia della Mezza Luna Rossa Palestinese (Croce Rossa). La missione degli AMLRP è finalizzata alla solidarietà sociale e alla tutela dei diritti umani delle persone svantaggiate in ragione di delicate condizioni politiche, sociali ed economiche. In particolare, l’associazione AMLRP, in collaborazione con la Mezza Luna Rossa Palestinese (Croce Rossa) e altre ONG (Organizzazioni non governative), promuove aiuti di carattere socio-sanitario e iniziative a favore della maternità e l’infanzia, fra cui il sostegno a distanza di bambini palestinesi, orfani e/o feriti di guerra.

Al fine di lenire la sofferenza del popolo palestinese, il progetto di sostegno a distanza garantisce ai bambini palestinesi in difficoltà i bisogni primari: cibo, assistenza sanitaria, educazione e rispetto della propria cultura e identità, attraverso l’amore dei donatori che seguono la loro crescita e partecipano alla loro quotidianità.

ASSOPACE PALESTINA

L'Associazione si fa promotrice di progetti politici e culturali volti alla realizzazione del disarmo, alla soluzione dei conflitti esistenti nel mondo, alla risoluzione dello squilibrio tra paesi ricchi e paesi poveri. Al rispetto e alla promozione dei diritti umani e delle libertà dei popoli e delle donne, alla pratica della nonviolenza e all'affermazione di una nuova idea di rapporto con il pianeta che ponga fine alla violenza fra le persone e sulla natura.

L'Associazione si fa promotrice di progetti e iniziative che mirino al superamento di ogni forma di esclusione e discriminazione basata su motivi di razza, sesso, opinioni politiche, credo religioso o appartenenza ad un determinato gruppo etnico, sociale o culturale. In particolare l'Associazione si impegna a contrastare ogni forma di razzismo e a favorire la costruzione di una società multiculturale basata sull'accettazione delle differenze e la valorizzazione delle diversità.

L'Associazione opera in maniera specifica con prestazioni non occasionali ed ha per scopo l'elaborazione, promozione, realizzazione di progetti di solidarietà sociale, culturale ed artistica tra cui l'attuazione di iniziative socioeducative e culturali con particolare attenzione al popolo palestinese.

Lo spirito e la prassi dell'Associazione trovano origine nel rispetto dei principi della Costituzione Italiana che hanno ispirato l'Associazione stessa e si fondano sul pieno rispetto della dimensione umana, culturale e spirituale della persona. 

FOTOGRAFI SENZA FRONTIERE

L’associazione Fotografi Senza Frontiere prende avvio da un laboratorio realizzato dal fotografo Giorgio Palmera con bambini lavoratori in Nicaragua nel 1997. Sulla base di quell'esperienza, nel 2003 viene ufficialmente fondata la ONLUS col fine di realizzare: da un lato, laboratori fotografici permanenti in contesti di disagio sociale; dall’altro, un gruppo indagine per produrre lavori di documentazione fotografica, video e giornalistica. Fotografi Senza Frontiere-ONLUS (FSF) riunisce un gruppo di fotografi e di professionisti del settore che si occupano di aprire laboratori permanenti di fotografia e video in aree critiche del mondo, offrendo a soggetti che vivono situazioni di svantaggio, marginalità o post-emergenza una possibilità di autorappresentazione consapevole e l'opportunità di apprendere le basi di un mestiere. Spesso in situazioni di emergenza la cosa più importante che viene a mancare non è soltanto il cibo, la salute, i medicinali ma l'identità. Obiettivo di FSF-ONLUS è aiutare chi l'ha persa a poterla ricostruire. La filosofia di FSF-ONLUS poggia sulle basi della moderna antropologia culturale e si fonda sulla convinzione che la pratica della fotografia possa rendere la comunicazione più libera e fruibile a coloro che fino ad oggi l'hanno solamente subita. Per far si che in un prossimo futuro essi possano trasformarsi da semplici oggetti a soggetti attivi della comunicazione. Potendo raccontare dal di dentro le proprie storie. Potendo ritrovare, e conservare, la propria identità.

PALESTINE  THROUGH THE PHOTOS OF JAAFAR ASHTIYEH

The Roman Network of Solidarity with the Palestinian People along with one of its members, the Friends of the Palestinian Red Crescent, were invited to embark on this remarkable endeavour before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.  We had been asked to help work on this project by two young Italian men – Marco Cattaneo and Andrea Paone – who had travelled to Palestine, met with the photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh and had made the realization of this exhibition, with Astiyeh’s participation, their set goal.Unfortunately, theproject had to be put on hold for around two years, but we have now joined forces with two associations – Assopace Palestina and Fotografi Senza Frontiere – and individual activists to finally bring into being an exhibition of the outstanding photographs of Jaafar Ashtiyeh, an award-winning Palestinian photoreporter. We plan to create an exhibition with related events that will also travel to Milan and Naples. The main exhibition and events will be held at the Città dell’Altra Economia in Rome from 27 May to 3 June 2022 with the active participation the photographer himself. The show will then travel to Milan, along with the photographer, to Milan where it will be exhibited at the Cascina Casottello from 5 to 10 June 2022.

Aside from the exhibition, there will be a ‘World Café debate’, focusing on aspects concerning freedom of expression, with the media as a main focus. There will also be other occasions during his stay in Italy for Mr Ashtiyeh to share his many experiences of working as a photographer dedicated to documenting the daily life of Palestinians and their difficulties, suffering and longings under Israeli military occupation.

WHAT DO WE WANT TO ACHIEVE?

Help us to create an exhibition and related events to reach a wider, and less informed, audience by combining a strong aesthetic impact with a very important and message – donate what you can.

The project intends to broaden people’s knowledge, through the vivid images of Jaafar Ashtiyeh’s photographs, of the various aspects of daily life of Palestinian people under occupation as well as of the suffering and drama affecting women, men and children who for over 70 years have not known freedom and peace in their own land. We firmly believe in the efficacy of culture in all its expressions in conveying the true nature of the conditions facing Palestinians today, especially those living under the pressures of the current occupation. The high aesthetic expression of Ashtiyeh's photographs combines well with the powerful images he chooses in order to tell this complex story, producing an impact that goes far beyond what the usual news sources can tell us.

Your donation will allow us to

• Invite and host Jaafar Ashtiyeh in Italy;
• present a high-quality exhibition of his work in Rome;
• enable him to travel to Milan and Naples to extend his reach to a wider public; and
• make possible a number of events that will all contribute to raising awareness of the true situation in occupied Palestine as well as of the issues facing freedom of expression more generally.

By donating to our project you will be actively enabling this highly talented and seasoned professional photojournalist to reach a much wider Italian audience through his photographs that document the lives of Palestinians. These photographs capture a poignant and undeniable reality. They represent, as such, an act of resistance against the occupation, a form of resistance to which you too can contribute. And all this in what will be his first exhibition not only in Italy, but anywhere outside the Middle East.

The group of associations and individuals who have come together to work on this project will be coordinating all the aspects involved, including the various fundraising activities needed to make sure it becomes a successful reality.

However, we need concrete help to achieve our goals: we therefore ask for the support of our community, and anyone who wants to support the work of Palestinian photographers like Jaafar Ashtiyeh, those who work to document and make known the struggles of the Palestinian people while upholding the universal human right to freedom of expression.

THE PHOTOREPORTER

Jaafar Ashtiyeh was born in Nablus, in the West Bank in 1968.

In 40 years of fieldwork he has documented scenes of conflict and everyday life with his camera; always in his beloved land, Palestine, hoping that one day he will be able to live in peace and free from any conflict.

His international career began in 1996 when he began working as a photojournalist for the Agence France-Presse (AFP), one of the most important and authoritative press agencies in the world. He has had numerous exhibitions internationally and has been the recipient of awards throughout his long career.

In 2017 he received the Arab Journalism Award in Dubai and, in the United States, Honorable Mention, as part of the International News Single Category at the Photo Contest of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), which recognized his strong influence on public opinion through his work. In the same year, Arabian Business magazine listed him among the 100 most influential people in the United Arab Emirates.

WHAT ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SUBJECTS AND WHY THIS PARTICULAR EXHIBITION?

In 21 years of activity, as a photographer, I have often found myself in dangerous situations and have been injured more than 20 times. Jaafar Ashtiyeh aspires to freedom, as an inviolable right, for Palestinians and for all human beings. The photographic subjects immortalize scenes of daily life, which convey the tension and continuous oppression which all Palestinians are forced to confront each day: children who, to avoid being attacked by the settlers, cannot go to school; men, young and old, humiliated and mistreated; and houses destroyed and devastated by war and raided at night by soldiers, with children being taken from their mothers. So many countless and incessant violations of fundamental rights. And in the midst of all this, the daily life that continues, the courage of women, the great love for their land, the hope that never gives up. All this meets the visitor who manages to reach Palestine today, and who finds her/himself immersed in an occupation that has lasted for over seventy years, because the international community continues to look the other way, while claiming that this is "the century of human rights ". This paradox is represented with wisdom and technical ingenuity by a man who represents one of the categories of persons most severely harassed, attacked and repressed by the state of perpetual occupation: a journalist.

WHO WE ARE

LA RETE ROMANA DI SOLIDARIETA’ CON IL POPOLO PALESTINESE 

(ROMAN SOLIDARITY NETWORK WITH THE PEOPLE OF PALESTINE) 

The Roman Network of Solidarity with the People of Palestine was founded at a time when Rome was responding to the year-long attack by the Israeli armed forces against Gaza, which lasted from 27 December 2008 to 18 January 2009, called Operation Cast Lead by the Israeli military forces. The public response was so vast that it led more than thirty associations, committees and groups - which all hold different political and cultural positions – to voice their solidarity with the Palestinian people. The context of emergency highlighted the importance of joining efforts for the common cause, which also indicate that collaboration could continue: this is how this ”Network" was created in the shape of a collective body, one that, although lacking formal organizational characteristics, would nonetheless help advance synergies and, where and whenever possible, coordinate initiatives organized of the various associations. By preserving the identity and positions of every partner body, the Network is united by the common values ​​of anti-fascism, upholding equal rights for all, opposing all forms of racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and ethnic and religious discrimination. Its leading objective is to support the struggle of the Palestinian People without taking part in internal party-affiliated political issues: we commit to work towards ending the occupation, and ensuring the right to return and the attainment of freedom and equal rights among all the populations of historic Palestine.

AMICI DELLA MEZZALUNA ROSSA PALESTINESE 

(FRIENDS OF THE PALESTINIAN RED CRESCENT)        

The Friends of the Palestinian Red Crescent (AMLRP) is an Italian non-profit association founded in 2003 by the Italian writer and politician Raniero La Valle and the Palestinian pediatrician Dr. Yousef Salman, the representative for Italy of the Palestinian Red Crescent (Red Cross). The AMLRP mission aims at social solidarity and the protection of human rights of disadvantaged people due to the fragile local political, social and economic conditions. In particular, the collaboration of the AMLRP with the Palestinian Red Crescent (Red Cross) and other NGOs promotes socio-medical aid and initiatives in favor of maternity and children’s care, including distance support for Palestinian children, orphans and /or the war-related wounded/disabled. In order to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, the long-distance support project guarantees primary needs for Palestinian children in difficulty such as the provision of food, health care, education and respect for their culture and identity. This project enables donors to follow these children’s growth and thus participate in their daily lives.

ASSOPACE PALESTINA

The spirit and practice of the Association originate in a respect for the principles of the Italian Constitution that inspired the Association itself and are based themselves on full respect for the human, cultural and spiritual dimension of the individual. The Association promotes political and cultural projects aimed at the realization of disarmament, at the solution of existing conflicts in the world and at the resolution of the imbalance between rich and poor countries. For respect for and promotion of human rights and freedoms of peoples and women, the practice of nonviolence and the affirmation of a new idea of ​​our relationship with the planet that puts an end to violence between people and against nature.

The Association promotes projects and initiatives that aim at overcoming any form of exclusion and discrimination based on race, sex, political opinions, religious beliefs or belonging to a specific ethnic, social or cultural group. In particular, the Association is committed to combating all forms of racism and to favoring the construction of a multicultural society based on the acceptance of differences and the enhancement of diversity.

The Association operates in a specific way with non-occasional services and has as its purpose the elaboration, promotion and realization of social, cultural and artistic solidarity projects, including the implementation of socio-educational and cultural initiatives with particular focus on the Palestinian people.

The spirit and practices of the Association originate in a respect for the principles of the Italian Constitution that inspired the Association itself and are based on full respect for the human, cultural and spiritual dimension of each person.

The Photographers Without Borders Association first took off from a workshop created by the photographer Giorgio Palmera with child laborers in Nicaragua in 1997. On the basis of that experience, the non-profit was officially founded in 2003 with the aim of creating: on the one hand, permanent photographic laboratories in contexts of social hardship; on the other, an investigation group to produce photographic, video and journalistic documentation. Photographers Without Borders-ONLUS (FSF) brings together a group of photographers and professionals in the sector who are involved in opening permanent photography and video laboratories in critical areas of the world, offering subjects living in disadvantaged, marginalized or post-emergency situations a possibility of conscious self-representation and the opportunity to learn the basics of a profession. Often, in emergency situations, the most important thing that is missing is not only food, health services and medicines, but a sense of identity. The goal of FSF-ONLUS is to help those who have lost it to be able to rebuild it. The philosophy of FSF-ONLUS rests on the foundations of modern cultural anthropology and is based on the belief that the practice of photography can make communication more free and useful for those who have been its subjects up to now. To ensure that in the near future they can be transformed from simple objects into active subjects of communication. Being able to tell their own stories from within. Being able to find, and keep, their own identity.
